Support
"Taigi" is an offline Taiwanese (台語) dictionary app built on the Taiwan Ministry of Education's《臺灣台語常用詞辭典》open dataset. Alongside the dictionary, a Learn tab teaches the Tai-lo basics and the 700 most common characters.
FAQ
How do I search?
You can search in Hanji or Tai-lo Romanization. Diacritic tone marks are optional — results are the same with or without them. Both short (1–2 character) and longer (3+ character) queries are supported. When the search field is empty, the app displays category browsing (23 categories / 103 subcategories).
Audio playback doesn't work
Audio must be downloaded before first use, from "Settings → Audio Packs". Word audio and example audio are separate packs. After download, audio plays back fully offline.
If a download fails, the app shows one of "Offline", "Server error", or "Out of storage" as the reason. Please check your network connection or available device storage.
Does the app work offline?
The dictionary text (glosses, examples, category index) is bundled with the app, so search works offline as soon as you install. Audio is also offline after the optional one-time download described above.
Can I switch between Hanji and POJ / Pe̍h-ōe-jī?
The app displays Hanji and Tai-lo together. POJ is not provided because the underlying Ministry of Education dataset does not include it.
What is in the Learn tab?
The Learn tab has three parts: Today, which is where each day starts; the word list and study record for the 700 most common characters; and the five units of the Tai-lo basics (initials, rimes, tones, syllable structure and a mixed drill). The Tai-lo basics are free, and the 700 characters are split into 7 lessons with lesson 1 free. Lessons 2–7, Tai-lo dictation and studying straight from your dictionary bookmarks are unlocked by the one-time Study purchase.
What you see and when you see it is decided by the app: reading, writing and listening take turns, so there is no daily quota for you to configure.
What is the difference between Pro and Study?
Pro covers the dictionary-side tools: look up anywhere, wildcard search, unlimited camera lookup and the advanced widgets. Study includes all of that and additionally unlocks the full learning material. Both are one-time purchases shared across every device on the same Apple ID. If you bought Pro before Study went on sale, the learning material unlocks automatically — no need to buy it again. If a purchase does not show up on a new device, tap "Restore purchases" on the purchase screen.
Where is my learning progress stored?
Only on your device; it is never sent anywhere. There is no cross-device sync, so progress does not carry over to another device (purchases themselves are shared through your Apple ID).

For schools and organizations
You're welcome to use "Taigi" in classrooms and for teaching Taiwanese.
- Free and offline: Search, category browsing, bookmarks, and audio are all free. After install, the app needs no network and no account sign-in, so it suits shared classroom iPads.
- Managed devices: When deployed via Apple School/Business Manager (volume purchase), the free features above keep working even if in-app purchases are disabled on the device. Such devices may be unable to buy the one-time Pro (advanced features) — this is expected.
- Attribution: The app preserves the Ministry of Education's 《臺灣台語常用詞辟典》 text and attribution verbatim (CC BY-ND 3.0 Taiwan), suitable for classroom citation.
- Deployment questions: For volume deployment, classroom use, or feature requests, email noform.dev@gmail.com.
