"Hi Taigi" (formerly Taigi Dictionary) is an offline Taiwanese (台語) dictionary app built on the Taiwan Ministry of Education's《臺灣台語常用詞辭典》open dataset. The dictionary and its tools are all free. The Learn tab, for studying Taiwanese, is unlocked by the Taigi Plus subscription.

FAQ

Has the app been renamed?

Yes. From 4.0, "Taigi Dictionary" is called "Hi Taigi". It is the same app, so your bookmarks and records stay after the update and there is nothing to reinstall.

How do I search?

You can search in Hanji, Tâi-lô, POJ (Pe̍h-ōe-jī) or numbered tones. Tone marks are optional: results are the same with or without them. Short 1–2 character queries work too. Besides headwords, the search also looks through examples and definitions. Use the wildcards ＊ and ？ for characters you can't recall.

When the search field is empty, you can browse the dictionary instead: topics from the Ministry of Education's classification (23 categories / 103 subcategories) and appendices of place names, station names, solar terms, loanwords, surnames, dialect differences and proverbs.

Audio playback doesn't work

Audio comes as downloadable audio packs. Word audio starts downloading when you close the first-run guide or first tap a speaker button. Example audio is a separate pack: tapping an example's speaker button opens the download screen. Both play fully offline once downloaded.

If a download fails, the app shows one of "Offline", "Server error" or "Out of storage" as the reason. Please check your network connection and available device storage.

Does the app work offline?

The dictionary text (definitions, examples, topic index) is bundled with the app, so search works offline as soon as you install. Audio also plays offline once downloaded as described above. Looking words up needs no account and no sign-in.

Can I switch between Hanji and POJ / Pe̍h-ōe-jī?

The app displays Hanji and Tâi-lô together and cannot switch the display to POJ, because the underlying Ministry of Education dataset does not include it. You can, however, type POJ into the search.

What is free?

Dictionary search, topics, appendices, bookmarks, audio playback, look-up-anywhere (select text in any other app to look it up), wildcard search, camera lookup, name readings, the kinship calculator and the home-screen widgets are all free, with no limits. From 4.0 you no longer need to buy Pro for them. The Tâi-lô basics in the Learn tab (five units of listening and practice) are free as well.

What is in the Learn tab?

The first time you open the Learn tab, "Tell us about you" asks a few questions and sets up your first plan to match your level and goals.

The app decides what you see and when: reading, writing, listening and speaking take turns, so there is no daily quota to configure. Every definition, example and recording used in questions comes from the MoE dictionary. Everything in Learn apart from the Tâi-lô basics is unlocked by Taigi Plus.

How does "Say this word" judge my pronunciation?

The question hides the Tâi-lô and shows only the characters. After you say the word, the app draws your tones over the dictionary's recording. The verdict is only a guide and can be wrong even when you said it right, so when the word comes back depends on your own grade (such as "All correct"). This question needs permission to use the microphone. The recording is used only for the judgement on the device; it is never saved or sent anywhere.

What does Taigi Plus cost, and how do I cancel?

Taigi Plus is an auto-renewing subscription, billed weekly or yearly. The yearly plan comes with a 7-day free trial for first-time subscribers. Prices are set by your region's App Store and shown on the purchase screen. It works on every device with the same Apple ID.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends and the next one will not be charged. You can cancel or change plans in your App Store account settings, or from "Manage Subscription" on the app's Info screen. If a purchase does not show up on a new device, tap "Restore Purchase" on the purchase screen.

I bought Study or Pro before

If you bought Study, or bought Pro before Study went on sale, Study's learning content (all seven lessons of the 700 common characters, Tâi-lô dictation, reading examples aloud and learning from your bookmarks) stays free for you with no subscription, including future improvements to it such as new question formats and bug fixes.

If you bought Pro at another time, Pro's tools are now free for everyone, so you keep all of them. The lessons, everyday scenes, Study Log and cross-device sync added in 4.0 are unlocked by Taigi Plus. If a purchase does not show up, tap "Restore Purchase" on the purchase screen.

Where is my learning progress stored?

On your device. Taigi Plus subscribers who sign in with Apple can sync their bookmarks, word lists, learning progress and the history of entries they have looked up across devices. Signing in is optional and free. If you don't sign in, or don't have Plus, this data stays on the device and is not sent to any server. For what signing in stores, see the Privacy Policy.

I found an error in the dictionary content

The app reproduces the《臺灣台語常用詞辭典》verbatim and does not make edits (per CC BY-ND license requirements). Corrections to the source dictionary should be directed to the official MoE dictionary site at sutian.moe.edu.tw.
